About Us
May 19th, 2007 . by adminLet’s start out with who we are and where we came from!
Johnny B’s Entertainment was established in 1979, as a part-time business. One owner/operator that had some spare record players (we like to call them “turntables” now). His first party was for a friend’s 18th birthday. Of course, it was a volunteer effort. But he had a idea! Why not use these record players (turntables) to play music at parties and charge money for it? He had been an avid music lover and had collected enough music over the years that everyone had listened to anyway, so he started to spread the word to his family and freinds.
Back in 1979, Phoenix was no where near the size it is today, but little did we know it was ready to explode. Back in 1979, the only way to get an entertainer to come to your party was to hire one of the local radio personalities. Well, that all changed, by charging aテつ WHOPPING $100.00 per show, he started to get calls. Soon he was booked 2-3 weekends per month. He was still working part-time as a door man at a local Phoenix Hotel, while trying to fulfill his dreams on the weekends. Well, needless to say, the Hotel started to hire him, realizing that a Disc Jockey Personality was much cheaper than hiring a band.
By December of 1981, he had saved enough money to purchase another set of equipment and hire his first employee at $7.00 per hour (which was quite a bit back then). He realized that charging $100.00 for the show and only paying his employee $28.00 (for a average 4 hour event) that not only was he making $100.00 for the show that he entertained at, but that he was making $72.00 dollars for the show he WASN’T WORKING!
By 1983, Johnny B’s Entertainment had become a full-time operation. At the time, Johnny B’s was the only full-time entertainment company in the state of Arizona. By 1985, there were 8, and now there are more than 50 full-time and part-time entertainment companies throughout the state of Arizona, but Johnny B’s Entertainment still remains at the top of the list.
1987, was a banner year for Johnny B’s. At one time they had 32 employees, sending out an average of 20 entertainers per weekend. More entertainment companies started to pop-up, but the funny thing was that all of these companies that were started were being run by people that had either worked for Johnny B’s or were trained by Johnny B’s. So, in essence, he was training his competition.
Now this is whereテつ I come in, my name is Mark, I started working for Johnny B’s in 1993, as a 23 year old, who had a good personality and enjoyed music, but needed to make some money on the weekends. テつ I was trained and worked for Johnny B’s Entertainment until 1999, which is when, I quit my job at Southwest Airlines making about $11.00 an hour. Me and my partner purchased the company. The original’s owner health was not so good, and the grind was getting to him. We spent the next year learning the ins and outs of the entertainment business. Now, in year 7 of ownership, we know quite a bit, and would would like to pass it along to you, just like the original ownerテつ didテつ for me when I was 23 and had no idea what it took to be a successful entertainer and owner.
The great thing about Johnny B’s Entertainment, and Owning a Johnny B’s, is that you can literally have no knowledge of the industry, and still, by using our techniques, turn your entertainment company into one of the biggest and most profitable in your area.
